Early Space
Before humans went into space they studied the stars and planets with telescopes from Earth. Different countries started their space exploration differently. To get into space the pull of gravity has to be overpowered. The Nazi Germans were the first to achieved a rocket powerful enough to beat gravity's pull. They launched a long distance rocket that was fast and powerful enough to get to space. Then on October fourth 1957 the soviets sent the Sputnik 1, the first satellite, into space. Four years after they launched the first human into space in the Vostok 1.
Timeline
1610- The first observation of the night sky through a telescope.
1840- The U.S took the first picture of the moon.

The Cold War between the United states and Russia ended and space was a new frontier. Around the end of the 1950's the two countries showed and compared their power and technology with the field of space. They battled against each other to race to space. By the end of the space race, there was no single winner. The Russian's exceeded with building and launching the first rocket and satellite. The United states exceeded by landing on the moon.
With every new field of study there are sacrifices. The race to space had a couple sacrifices and still does. The most notable loss was the Space Shuttle's explosion. In April of 1981 they launched the space shuttle Challenger, which shortly after exploded with seven civilian astronaut. The Space Shuttle Columbia then exploded in 2001 upon reentry.

The ISS, International Space Station, is a low orbiting research area. It took more than 30 missions and made over a span of 10 years. Representing 15 countries it flies in a low orbit around Earth. It weighs over 460 tons and is the size of a football field. In 1984 president Ronald Reagan directed NASA to start the ISS. During the end of 1998 the U.S. launched and connected the first parts. Then in 2000 the first people resided on the space station.
